Mid-Pacific Promotions Newsletter #007 (4/29) Island Slugfest (SPW World title match)

Hello fans and welcome to the Mid-Pacific Promotions event Island Slugfest brought to you live and on PPV courtesy of the SPW Network.  You can still subscribe to get this event for a monthly fee of $9.95 but that ends tomorrow so be sure to jump on that offer.  (Editor’s note:  all matches except the SPW World title will only have the last 5 minutes shown below to save on reading time but for those readers who want to read the entirety of the match, let me know as I’ll have it saved).

The show kicks off backstage where Heritage Champion Edge has arrived.  As he heads to his dressing room, someone wearing all black and a hoodie attacks him taking him out.  The attacker takes off as owners Reggie Parks and Dave Millican arrive to assess the situation.  Medics arrive and determine that Edge is not going to be able to wrestle in the main event against SPW World Champion Verne Gagne.  They immediately head off to confer on who will take his place.

The show begins with pyro going off.  “Word Life” begins playing through the loudspeakers and John Cena, accompanied by the Grand Wizard comes out and the fans are booing so loud it almost drowns out Cena’s music.  Cena flips them off not caring about them at all.  The music changes and like a rocket, the Ultimate Warrior bolts out from the back and Cena and the Grand Wizard exit the ring.  Warrior begins shaking the ropes like a mad man and the fans eat it up.  Warrior beckons Cena to enter the ring but Cena takes his time.  Finally, he’s in the ring and this one is underway.

Cena surprised the Ultimate Warrior and dominated the match but as time progressed, UW, with help from his little warriors) got the intestinal fortitude to battle back and take the match to the Dr. of Thuganomics.  We join the match at the 25 min mark.

Backstage, High Chief Peter Maivia is with his grandson the Rock and they are talking about tonight’s match.  Dave Millican walks in and welcomes the High Chief back to Honolulu.  Peter says he’s honored to fight tonight besides his grandson the Rock.  Dave says that due to a mixup in the card, tonight’s match will only be a singles match between Maivia and Samoa Joe.  Rock looks a little disappointed but the High Chief says “I’ve got this.  Don’t worry.”  Dave leaves the room.

It’s time for Match #2.  First, led to the ring by Mr. Fuji, the largest man on the HCW roster Yokozuna comes out and he looks determined.  Next, his opponent comes out and the 8th Wonder of the World Andre the Giant comes out and he looks good.  Andre enters the ring over the top rope and stands towering over Yokozuna.

Andre the Giant has done it.  He celebrates with the fans at ringside as Yokozuna and Mr. Fjui limp to the back.  With this final appearance, Andre leaves us in MPP and moves on.  Be sure to follow the rest of the SPW Alliance territories to see where Andre ends up next.

Reporter Mike Adamle is backstage with the Magnificent One Don Muraco and a beat up Mr. Fuji.  Muraco says that it’s a good thing Andre is leaving or he’d take the fight to him for laying his hands on his manager.  Muraco says that tonight, he beats the upstart Dean Malenko for the World title and then will volunteer to take on Verne Gagne for the SPW World title.  Reggie Parks walks in and tells Muraco to deal with one thing at a time.  They will find a replacement to meet Verne Gagne by the end of the night.

It’s time for the first of our cross-promotional matches.  Samoa Joe comes out first along with Mr. Fuji who looks a little worse for wear but seems to be ok.  Just as they get into the ring, over the loudspeakers blares:  “If you smellllllllllllllllll…what the HIGH CHIEF….is cookin’” and out comes High Chief Peter Maivia being accompanied to the ring by his grandson the Rock.  We are not sure if the pop is for the Rock or the High Chief.  Maivia high fives the fans as he walks down to the ring.  Joe is in the ring pacing like a tiger.  Rock remains outside the ring.

Samoa Joe wins with a Throw salt in eyes over Peter Maivia !!!

Samoa Joe stole a win over the High Chief but the Rock is not happy about it and he attacks Joe peppering him with lefts and rights before spitting into his hand and layin’ the smack down on Joe.  Joe struggles to his feet only to be caught with a Rock Bottom.  With Joe laying out in the middle of the ring, Rock motions to his grandfather who walks over to Joe and kicks his arm out of the way.  He then rushes the ropes bouncing off both side before coming to a stop over Joe and delivering the Polynesian Elbow.  The fans pop louder than anything we’ve ever heard.  Joe then manages to roll out of the ring and is helped to the back by Mr. Fuji.  Joe glares at the Rock and I’m sure this one is not over…not by a long shot.

We are backstage with the World Champion Dean Malenko and he says that with Edge out of the picture, the person who should go on to meet Verne Gagne for the SPW belt will be him and he’ll prove it by taking Muraco out early.

It’s time for our second cross-promotional match.  Music hits and out comes the Ascension – Viktor and Konnor.  They are dressed and painted up like the LOD.  They get in the ring and Viktor squeezes one of the spikes on Konnor’s shoulders and it makes a squeaking sound.  They laugh but that is cut short when over the loud speakers blares “Ohhhhhhhhhh WHAT A RUSH!” and out comes the Legion of Doom – Animal and Hawk – the Road Warriors.  They are PISSED and they rush the ring only to have Konnor and Viktor bail.  The LOD stand on the turnbuckles posing for the crowd and the Ascension try to sneak in but as soon as they are seen, they bail again.   A ref known in these parts as ‘Slow Count Sam’ made his way down to the ring and after nodding to Konnor and Vikor, he called for the match to begin.

 (NWA '88)     VS (Mowie)

(30 min time limit)

In what probably surprised everyone in the building, the Ascension actually held their own against the LOD and at multiple points during the show, they owned them.  However, it didn’t last too long as Hawk and Animal once again showed us why they are one of the best teams in the world.  We join the match at the 23 min mark.

Mike Adamle is backstage and corners the owners asking if they know who will take on Verne.  Reggie Parks says they want to wait and see the outcome of the match between Malenko and Muraco.

It’s time for our MPP World Title match.   ‘The Magnificent One’ Don Muraco makes his way out first accompanied by his manager Mr. Fuji.  Muraco motions to the crowd that he will be winning gold here tonight.  Next, the champ comes out and Dean Malenko gets a nice pop from the crowd.  He makes his way down and gets in the ring holding the World title in Muraco’s face which infuriated him all the more.

Just before the main event, Mike Adamle makes his way down to the ring and invites the SPW World Champion Verne Gagne to the ring.  Just as he is ready to conduct an interview, this happens:

***STRAIGHT EDGE*** flashes across the big screen and CM Punk makes his way out to the stage.  He has a mic in hand.  The fans pop like crazy!  CM PUNK IS HERE!

“The Straight Edge Society has come to Mid-Pacific Promotions.  I have something to say and I want you to digest this because I have a lot of things I want to get off my chest.

I don’t hate you, Verne.  I don’t even dislike you. I do like you. I like you a hell of a lot more than I like most people in the back here.

I hate this idea that you’re the best. Because you’re not. I’m the best. I’m the best in the world. There’s one thing you’re better at than I am and that’s kissing these people’s asses.

You’re as good as kissing ass as Hulk Hogan is to VMK.  I don’t know if you’re as good as Dwayne though. He’s a pretty good ass kisser. Always was and still is.

Whoops! I’m breaking the fourth wall!  (Punk waves to the camera)

I am the best wrestler in the world.

I’ve been the best since day one when I walked into this industry. And I’ve been vilified and hated since that day because Paul Heyman saw something in me that nobody else wanted to admit. That’s right, I WAS a Paul Heyman guy. You don’t see him here now because he knows better.

Wherever I’ve been, I’ve grabbed so many of the brass rings that it’s finally dawned on me that they’re completely imaginary. The only thing that’s real is me and the fact that day in and day out, for a long time, I have proved to everybody in the world that I am the best on this microphone, in that ring, even in commentary! Nobody can touch me!

And yet no matter how many times I prove it, I’m not on your lovely little collector cups. I’m not on the cover of the program. I’m barely promoted (Thanks WWF). I don't get to be in movies (DWAYNE). I’m certainly not on any crappy show on Network TV. I’m not on the poster of anyone’s major shows. I’m not on the signature that’s produced at the start of the show. I’m not on Stephen Colbert. I’m not on Jimmy Fallon. But the fact of the matter is, I should be.

This isn’t sour grapes. But the fact that people like Dave (Batista), John (Cena), Dwayne, and Jim (Helwig) are even contemplated for any main event at any show and I’m not makes me sick!

Oh hey, let me get something straight. Those of you who are cheering me right now, you are just as bad as those corporate shills who are writing this crap. Because you’re the ones who are sipping on those collector cups right now. You’re the ones that buy those programs that my face isn’t on the cover of. And then at five in the morning at the airport, you try to shove it in my face and get an autograph and try to sell it on eBay because you’re too lazy to go get a real job.

I’m putting Mid-Pacific Promotions and everyone here on notice.  I will get my hands on a championship.  It’s only a matter of time.  And once I do, and hell, who knows, maybe I’ll go defend it in ECW. Maybe… I’ll go back to WWF.

[Punk looks at the camera and waves]

Hey, Brooklyn Brawler, how you doing buddy?  You get that push you’ve been waiting for?  No? Well, hang in there little buckaroo… you’ll get it soon.

I’m just a spoke on the wheel. The wheel is going to keep turning and I understand that. At the end of the day, Vinnie Mac and the WWF had no idea what to do with me and that is why I’m here now.  Not using me at all…wow.

Let me tell you a personal story about Vince McMahon alright...”

Verne Gagne interrupts him saying “Listen here Punk, if you have something you want to prove, how about shutting your mouth and get in the ring and do something about it.”

Verne Gagne wins both falls and retains the SPW World Title in dominating fashion.

Verne is given back his title and he holds it high as a bewildered CM Punk sits in the corner unable to comprehend what just happened.   He favors his knee as he limps to the back.  Verne celebrates a moment longer and then is joined by MPP owners Reggie Parks and Dave Millican.  They congratulate Verne on his win.  Eventually the three of them leave bringing the show to an end.

After the cameras stopped rolling, High Chief Peter Maivia comes back out to thank the fans of MPP for the reception he’s gotten.  He thanks the IWA for allowing him to come back here.  He shakes hands with the fans but is once again interrupted by Samoa Joe and Yokozuna.  The two head to the ring and surround the High Chief.  Rock comes out and the two teams square off.  Reggie Parks comes out and adds one final match:  Rock & High Chief vs Joe and Yokozuna.  The match went 12 min and ended after Rock hit Joe with an overhead belly to belly suplex.  Joe and Yokozuna stumble up the ramp while Rock and the High Chief celebrate with the fans.

With that, the show REALLY has come to an end.  (All matches also available if anyone wants to see how it played out)
